HOME THEATER LONG ISLAND

Screening rooms used to be found only in the homes of Hollywood's "elite" but these days a Long Island home theater has become a household term. New homes are being built with a theater-quality cinema room in mind; and many existing homes are getting this "upgrade" to include a media room or home theater.

This space is quickly becoming the place for family and friends to spend fun times, watch your favorite movies, concerts, play video games and binge watch your favorite Netflix show in a fully immersive environment. With the right screen, lighting and surround sound you will feel like part of the action. You can learn about our Luxury Home Cinema Design Here by TKG, Theo Kalomirakis Group.

"How often do you escape with your family? Everyone loves going to a movie theater, being completely immersed into a story, without distractions. ATTYWON brings that magic and keeps you safe at home."          ~Eyal Akler

WHAT IS A HOME THEATER

Think back to the first time you went to a blockbuster motion picture in a movie palace.  The image was enormous, and the sound was glorious, seemingly coming from everywhere.  The goosebumps and the thrills were palpable, and the drama was all engrossing.  Afterwards, emerging into a warm summer evening, you could think of little else for hours if not days. Compare that to “watching TV.”  While televised entertainment can be engrossing, it simply does not have nearly the impact of the movie theater experience.  Even if you watch the same movie, it is just not the same.  Why?  First, the environment is quite different: the screen is not nearly so large; the room is generally not as dark; and the sound, coming from the tiny speakers in a modern flat panel television, is totally incapable of recreating the immersive aural experience of the movie house.  With a little planning and a modest investment, you can start making goosebumps.  By the way, home theater is not just about movies – sporting events, concert videos and sitcoms are all more enjoyable when watched (and heard) on a well-designed home entertainment system.

HOME THEATER LONG ISLAND DESIGN SERVICES

Not everyone has the space or the budget for a dedicated home theater.  Most families have mixed use great rooms as our only option.  Aesthetic considerations often place constraints on the size of the screen and the placement of the many external speakers needed to create an immersive experience.    Often overlooked is the need for controlled lighting.  We should also try to limit noise from an adjacent kitchen and minimize distracting traffic through the area.

A little creative planning may permit reorienting the room to minimize those distractions.  Modern lighting control and motorized blinds can help create the controlled environment needed for an absorbing experience.  In-room loudspeakers provide the ultimate in sound reproduction, but in-ceiling speakers can also offer impressive sound.  The size of the screen may be limited, but lighting control and high quality audio (supplemented by two carefully placed subwoofers*) can go a long way toward recreating the movie theater experience.

If perforating the ceiling for speakers is not an option, a good soundbar can be a remarkably effective alternative.  While it might be tempting to try the economical soundbars offered by TV manufacturers, if you are trying to recreate that movie theater experience, stick with products from quality loudspeaker companies.  Top quality soundbars can even do a surprisingly good job of reproducing the overhead audio channels required for an immersive experience.  And, while it may also be tempting to forego the subwoofer, please resist!  Even if you are not interested in playing blockbuster sound effects, there is no substitute for two (or at least one*) well placed subs for musical authenticity.

While our emphasis in this discussion has been on audio, please remember that lighting control is critical for a truly enjoyable home theater.  The most important thing is to prevent glare on the screen by shading windows and careful placement of lamps.  Once you have the glare under control and the audio dialed in, it is time to grab the popcorn, dim the lights and hit the play button.  Enjoy!

*We will discuss this at length in a future post.  In short, multiple subs are not about more bass.  Two (or more) subs ensure that every seat gets good bass.
